Glucose Screening Test

I had my glucose screening test (to check for gestational diabetes) on 7/9/09, and it was the worst appointment ever! I had to drink this orange-flavored sugar drink, which actually didn’t taste that bad, and wait 1 hour before taking a blood test. I felt fine until about 45-50mins into my hour, and I started to feel really sick. I felt very nauseous and felt like vomitting. I went to the restroom to try to puke, but nothing would come out. My stomach was making weird and loud noises. Since I only had a few minutes left, I waited until they called me in. While they were withdrawing my blood, I asked if it was normal to feel nauseous, and the lady told me it happens pretty often and that some people actually throw up. I told her I felt like I needed to throw up, and she said if I had thrown up before the blood work, I would have had to reschedule my appointment and do it all over again another day. Thank goodness I didn’t puke because I can’t imagine going through this again. On top of that, the doctor who I had an appointment with was running behind, and I had to end up seeing another doctor, and this 1 hour appointment turned into almost a 2 hour visit. The doctor gave me some pretzels and water and made me rest before driving home. I should’ve taken Shawn to the appointment with me, who knew I was going to get so sick from it? It’s just a sugar drink!! Most moms I’ve spoken to didn’t have any problems with this appointment so I’m thinking I just have a very sensitive stomach :-(

I hope to get the results of this test soon. If my blood work results come back positive, then I will have to do the second round of testing, which is the Glucose Tolerance Test. I hope and pray that I don’t fail this test, because the Glucose Tolerance Test is 3 hours long, will have to fast for a day or so before the test, and the drink has even more sugar and is bigger than the one I had to drink this time. Oh~~please please let me pass this test!

On a brighter note, I have my baby shower today! I’m so excited, I woke up bright and early with excitement. I can’t wait to see everyone and I feel so thankful for the wonderful friends and my sister that are putting it together for me. I know it’s a lot of work and I really appreciate everything! Can’t wait for 1pm! :-)
